SABBATH: Putting Our Worlds Back Together Again

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall; Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men, couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Fortunately this is a nursery rhyme and not a fact for us looking for rest.

But, too often it seems we push things to the extremes of Humpty Dumpty proportions—depressions and other disorders of burnout overwhelm us when our choice otherwise for Sabbath would’ve been a wise intervention (some time ago).

Sabbath is favour, and that all over ourselves. It is perhaps the best advice for the busy person, and who these days isn’t busy?

We’re making a choice, here, to work-to-rule and not any longer allow ourselves to be over-extended, at least for the period of the Sabbath-rest.

The Perennial Sabbath

How much better is it to always be rested? This is no ideal. It is where many of the spiritually-mature have attained and have worked hard to maintain.

The perennial Sabbath is a gorgeous state of existence and it’s mostly about the courage of our momentary convictions to be surrendered, with God. In this state we literally have no more need of being broken to Humpty Dumpty proportions.

Heading Back to Port

There comes a time, having sailed out to the high seas of life—headed knowingly for the perfect storm of the soul—of the return journey through the heads of safety; that cherished feeling of having achieved what we set out to, but now truly we’re in safety and ‘allowed’ to enjoy this well-earned rest.

We reflect at-ease and we enjoy the finer points of life in the lap of spiritual luxury.

Our task at rest is to take the peace we’ve found in that place back into the world with us as we re-enter the fray of life.
